Coleambally, Darlington Point and Jerilderie all set for a makeover

Residents and visitors alike can look forward to a makeover of Murrumbidgee Council’s townships in the coming months.

Murrumbidgee Council Mayor Ruth McRae said we have some exciting concepts in mind for each of our towns, including planter boxes, street art, tree planting and focused lighting. We’re now seeking community feedback on these ideas.

Cr McRae said we’ve undertaken several consultation processes over the last few years and that feedback closely guided the concepts that we’ve developed.

“Planter boxes, for example, has been a common theme over the years, so that has been incorporated into each town concept.

“However, we recognise that each of our towns are unique and has its own identity, so we have tailored different concepts for each one.

“Darlington Point for instance, has a rich indigenous history as well as a strong connection with the Murrumbidgee River, so these elements will be developed in the revitalisation plan”, Cr McRae said.

“Coleambally will soon undergo the Brolga Place redevelopment, so the beautification improvements will build on that.

“Jerilderie has a strong historical theme, but we feel some of our historical items, such as the Steel Wings windmill could be displayed more attractively. Also, both the windmill and the overall historical precinct can be better connected and linked to the main street.

Cr McRae said the project will be funded through the Australian Government’s Drought Communities Programme – Extension.

“We believe this project is so important that we have allocated $725,000 towards it”, she said.

“Beautifying our townships has many benefits. They become more attractive places to live and visit, which then flows on to improving the quality of life for our residents.

“We will have happier and more inclusive communities, as well as developing a stronger cultural identity for each of our unique towns”.

Cr McRae added the beautification project is part of an ongoing program and will be staged as funds become available.

“I encourage you to contact Council’s Manager for Planning & Environment Kelly Tyson on 0447 066 181 if you would like more information”, she said.

“You can also talk to any of our staff or Councillors who you might come across in street over the next week or two.

“Unfortunately there is a tight time frame to plan and complete the works so if you are interested in the project, please do come forward as we would like to hear from you!”, Cr McRae said.
