Have your say on future land use in the Murrumbidgee Council area

16 December 2021

The community is encouraged to have a say on the draft blueprint for land use in the Murrumbidgee Local Government Area for the next 20 years.

The plan has been developed after investigating the issues, constraints and opportunities affecting the Council area and follows on from extensive community consultation over the last 18 months.

Murrumbidgee Council Manager Planning and Environment Kelly Tyson said the plan aims to provide a clear direction for growth and ultimately lead to better and more sustainable planning decisions.

Mrs Tyson said land use planning is about finding that balance between economic development, social opportunity and environmental protection.

“It’s about understanding what is needed to achieve Council’s long term vision for the community and making the best decisions that deliver balanced outcomes while protecting the public interest.

“The Land Use Plan will underpin our new Local Environmental Plan that will be prepared next year and will set the legal requirements for making planning decisions about where and how development will occur,” she said.

The plan considers things like population forecasts, housing supply and demand, business, industrial and agricultural requirements, as well as infrastructure, community needs and other things.

Council has drawn on other strategic plans that have been developed to inform the plan, including the Local Strategic Planning Statement, the 20 Year Economic Vision for Regional NSW, the NSW Housing Strategy and the Riverina-Murray Regional Plan.

Landowners who are affected by the proposed rezonings have been contacted for comment.

View the draft plan.

Submissions are invited during the exhibition period from 10 January 2022 until 5 pm on 7 February 2022.

They should be addressed to the General Manager and emailed to mail@murrumbidgee.nsw.gov.au or sent to PO Box 96 Jerilderie NSW 2716.

For further information or questions please contact Council’s Planning and Environment Department on 1300 676 243.
