Vote now to capture Jerilderie's extraordinary history

Community groups and Murrumbidgee Council are hoping residents in the NSW Government Albury electorate will get behind Jerilderie’s latest idea to promote the unique history with Ned Kelly and Sir John Monash.

The project is in the running to get funding through the NSW Government’s My Community Project grant program.

Jerilderie Monash Committee Member Susan Neilan said the committee, together with Lions Club of Jerilderie and Murrumbidgee Council, hopes to erect a bronze statue to honour the incredible moment in history when 12 year old John Monash held the reins of notorious bushranger Ned Kelly's horse for a shilling.

Ms Neilan said we are all very proud of our unique and rich history that includes both Sir John Monash and Ned Kelly.

“Sir John Monash was not only one of Australia's most famous military commanders, but he was also recognised for his contributions to business and the community.

“And Ned Kelly is one of the most famous bushrangers in Australia’s history,” Ms Neilan said.

Murrumbidgee Mayor Ruth McRae said Council is delighted to support the project.

“It is quite incredible that our amazing little town of Jerilderie has such an enormous history!

“We hope lots of people in the State electorate of Albury will get behind the project and vote using their Service NSW account,” said Cr McRae.

To assist people with voting, Susan Neilan and Caroline Heath will be available at the Jerilderie Library on Friday 26 July and Wednesday 31 July from 10.30 am – 12 noon. Residents should bring their Medicare card to enable them to cast their vote.

The project has been nominated for funding through My Community Project grants (through the NSW Government's Generations Fund).

The winning project is decided by a public vote.
