WIRADJURI WALK HELPS MURRUMBIDGEE BUSINESS

A new pilot project in the Murrumbidgee Council area showcasing and celebrating Wiradjuri heritage will test how streets utilised as shared public spaces can help business recovery and growth.

Murrumbidgee Council’s Wiradjuri Walk proposal is one of 48 successful proposals across the State and will come to life thanks to $460,000 in funding from the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces program.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier Steph Cooke said the funding will help to transform the area with public art and new street surfaces.

“The Streets as Shared Spaces program is part of the NSW Government’s efforts to encourage new and improved pedestrian and active transport links that facilitate social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ms Cooke said.

“Not only will these projects improve how we use our public spaces, they will create employment opportunities and make our streets more welcoming for visitors and the members of our communities.”

Planning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes said there had been overwhelming interest in the program, with more than 145 applications from 99 councils.

“Whether it is new cycle lanes, pedestrian-only streets or wider footpaths, we’re working with councils and communities to fund projects that can make life better for everyone – both now and into the future,” Mr Stokes said.

“The successful projects demonstrate how innovative thinking can transform under-utilised space into accessible public spaces for our communities to enjoy.”

Murrumbidgee Council Mayor Ruth McRae said the project is a boost for the community.

“$460,000 is a very generous amount of funding and it is a huge injection for a rural council,” Cr McRae said

“This is a great opportunity to tell Darlington Point’s story, we have a deep and rich cultural history. Using public art to telling this story will have an immediate visible impact and show this investment in to the community.”

The Streets as Shared Spaces program aims to support physical distancing requirements during COVID-19, promote the health of local economies and furthers the NSW Government’s Premier’s Priority to create greener public spaces.

Councils will need to obtain all of the relevant approvals and engage with their community in delivering the projects.

General Manager John Scarce said we are conducting a survey to gather feedback from rural residents about implementing a roadside collection service for garbage and recycling.

Waste Management Charges set for Murrumbidgee

Ratepayers in the Murrumbidgee now have certainty of their domestic waste charges when the area moves to three kerbside bins in July this year. Jerilderie Swimming Pool set to reopen

Murrumbidgee Council is pleased to announce the newly upgraded Jerilderie Swimming Pool will reopen on Saturday 21 November 2020. Murrumbidgee Council Mayor Ruth McRae said it is very exciting the new facility is finished in time for summer.
