Message from the Mayor - March 2020

Welcome to my Mayoral Message for March.

Our first Council meeting for the year was held last week. There was a lot of business to get through and a number of important resolutions were made.

It was decided at the meeting that future Council meetings will commence at 1.00 pm. The next meeting is scheduled for 24 March, with members of the community always welcome to attend.

On display at the meeting were the designs for the $1.96 million Jerilderie Swimming Pool. Construction will commence at the beginning of April, with the pool closing a week earlier than usual. My apologies to the community for this unavoidable closure, but the finished result will be well worth it.

The Jerilderie Pre-School Kindergarten is a step closer with Council providing in-principle support to the proposal. This is an exciting project for Jerilderie which will see the new centre catering for 43 children and providing employment for 11 people.

The decision was made at the meeting to sign a Letter of Intent for the NRMA to go ahead with a feasibility study to install an electric vehicle fast charging station in Jerilderie. It is proposed to locate it in one of the Council owned parking spaces behind the Jerilderie Civic Hall.

The Jerilderie Working Dog Auction was a great success on the weekend. We also have lots of other terrific events coming up across the area.

The International Women’s Day luncheon is on in Jerilderie on 13 March, with guest speaker dual Paralympian Dr Hannah MacDougall. This free event is a wonderful chance to get together and celebrate the contribution women make to our rural community. I hope to see you there.

We also have the AFL “Tackle your feelings” coaching program in Jerilderie on 5 March, the Youth Week bus trip on 5 April and the Seniors Luncheon on 29 April.

Council is very pleased to host and support these free events throughout our community. These events play a vital role in keeping our community strong and vibrant.

Kind regards

Ruth McRae
