Murrumbidgee Council has decided to put the proposal for rural waste collection on hold after research showed the service is not feasible at the present time. This decision was made after a recent survey of all rural landholders showed that around 354 farmhouses are currently in use. As a result, the council has decided to shelve the proposal for rural waste collection and revisit it in three years’ time. Murrumbidgee Council Mayor Ruth McRae expressed the council's stance, stating, "While we are very enthusiastic to improve waste management practices across the whole council area, the cost of providing the service is too high at this stage." Cr McRae reassured residents that although the proposal is being put on hold for the time being, the council remains open to revisiting the idea in the future or investigating other options. “An alternative option is transfer stations at select locations in the rural community if this is feasible. “Rural waste collection is one of a suite of improvements the council is implementing to waste management. This includes the introduction of organics collection across the whole council area and recycling collection for Jerilderie residents, both of which commenced in July last year,” Cr McRae said. She further added that the community input was invaluable and thanked community members who participated in the survey.
