Sturt Highway Taskforce

We are proud to be a member of the Sturt Highway Taskforce, a collaboration of eight local councils working together to improve safety along one of Australia’s most important inland transport routes.

The Sturt Highway connects New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, carrying thousands of vehicles every day — including a large proportion of heavy freight. It is a vital link for our regional communities, connecting people to markets, services and opportunities.

However, despite its significance, the highway continues to experience serious safety issues. Too many lives have been lost, and too many families and communities have been affected.

The Sturt Highway Taskforce - comprising Wagga Wagga, Narrandera, Leeton, Murrumbidgee, Hay, Murray River, Balranald and Wentworth councils - is united in calling for targeted investment and coordinated action to make the highway safer for everyone.

Our priorities

  • investment in safety infrastructure, including overtaking lanes and road widening
  • improved maintenance and upgrades along critical sections
  • better road user education around fatigue, speed, and caravan towing safety

Together, we are advocating for lasting improvements that protect lives, strengthen freight efficiency, and support the wellbeing of all who live, work and travel along the Sturt Highway.

The message is clear - the time for action is now.
