Full Merger Proposal for Jerilderie and Murrumbidgee

At Council's January 2016 ordinary meeting, Tuesday 26, discussion took place regarding the feasibility of presenting to the Minister for Local Government, Paul Toole, MP, a merger proposal for the whole of Jerilderie Shire with Murrumbidgee Shire.

The current proposal by the NSW Government is to merge the northern half of Jerilderie Shire Council with Murrumbidgee Council and the remainder south of the Yanco Creek to be merged with Berrigan Shire Council. 

The following resolution was made:

05/01/16         Resolved on the motion of Councillors Bryce and Hudson that:

  • a proposal be prepared to merge the Shire Councils of Jerilderie and Murrumbidgee.
  • the support of Murrumbidgee and Berrigan Shire Councils be formally requested for the proposal.
  • the support of the State Member for Albury, Greg Aplin and the State Member for Murray, Adrian Piccoli,  be formally requested for the proposal.
  • the merger  proposal be presented to the Minister for Local Government under Section 218 (E)  of the Local Government Act 1993 requesting that it be dealt with concurrently with the Minister’s proposals for Jerilderie Shire Council.

Council conducted public information sessions at Darlington Point on Tuesday 2 February and at Coleambally on Wednesday 3 February to discuss the proposal with the local community and gauge their interest and thoughts on the proposal.
